Tornado Devastates Missouri

|

On May 22, 2011, Joplin, Missouri was struck with the deadliest single twister in the US since 1947. Reaching EF5 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale (the highest given rating), the vortex hit with 200 mile-per-hour winds (about 328 km/hour) and left a trail of destruction in its wake. Tearing a path almost a mile wide, the twister destroyed over 8000 buildings. About 140 people have been listed as killed so far, but that death toll may yet rise as more bodies are discovered. As of May 30th, 29 people remained unaccounted for, 113 victims have been identified, and almost a thousand are injured. The cost to rebuild Joplin may potentially reach $3 billion US.
