Two week ago, a number of students competed for the position of Student Trustee. Sam Ali, the Grade 11 Student Council Representative, won, coming out on top over three other candidates.
The job of Student Trustee is a paid one: $2500 for the one year term. Students are able to work together with the school board and provide them with a better perspective of the opinion of the student body. "It's a really good chance for students to get out there and be the voice of their peers in a place where it really matters. The school board creates the policies that affect the school after all," said Emily Eisenbraun-Stone.
All candidates were required to make a speech on Wednesday after school to the Student Council, which chooses their school's representative. There is then another round of elections for the region, and each region's representative will then serve with the board. It faithfully follows the democratic process.
This time around, Student Council had a difficult time choosing amongst all of the candidates and there was much heated debate. Ultimately, however, there was one decisive winner. Those who were not chosen are encouraged to try again next year!
It is an honour to be chosen for such a position and the school is proud to send Sam Ali as our delegate. While she did not receive the position, we congratulate her on her efforts and oration.
