Review: Next

|

The novel Next written by Michael Crichton is full of suspense, tragic humor and science. As an option for the Grade 12 University Biology course's (SBI4U) ISU, this novel makes a great subject for a term paper. Next was my choice for the Biology ISU. While others in my class were set to work on their video projects about parts of cellular respiration or protein synthesis, I was busy reading.

While reading the novel I learned many things. For one, I learned that I enjoy Michael Crichton's novels and decided I would get more, and I did. Secondly, I learned that Michael Crichton does his homework. At the back of the book is a set of references which he used to write his book. Thirdly, it re-enforced my enjoyment of Biology. The possibilities shown in the book give new perspective on the many opportunities that lay beyond my current knowledge. One final thing I learned is that this is the kind of book that makes term papers and book reports easy. All the information needed is there, and any additional information can be found on Michael Crichton's site, or in his references.

This book is very inventive and unique, and shows science that could be very open to people in the near future. As a novel I recommend it to others. It is a very good read and gives new perspectives on things such as patents and gene therapy. I recommend it to those who like intelligent reads, not simple plotlines.

For those who have an interest I rate this 4 out of 5 stars. It would be 5 out of 5 except that it really is not a book for all readers. Go read it.
