Mother's Day

|

This past Sunday was Mother's Day, a celebration of nurturers everywhere. As with Valentine's Day, one must wonder: why do we wait until designated dates to appreciate our loved ones? Ideally, being nice to our matronly figures should occur on a daily basis.

A typical Mother's Day activity and throwback to younger years, is making your mother breakfast in bed; again, this is a mindless task, because children often do not end up doing the dishes or scraping leftover batter off the wafflemaker. Buying flowers is another idea with less potential for trouble. These plans usually become more sophisticated with time; older offspring, inevitably, offer better gifts. There is a certain age at which kids need to kick it up a proverbial notch and accelerate to more elaborate and expensive shows of affection, but really, it isn't about money. It's about loving your mother, and doing nice things for the women in your life to remind them that they're important. And also that you literally, physically, would not be here without them.
