Lunchtime bag thefts bring rules into question

|

What do you do when you're buying lunch? That's right - when you get to the door, you drop your bag and head inside. Increasingly, though, this time-tested tradition is under threat. Thanks to the unscrupulous behaviour of certain unknown Innisdale students, your bags are no longer safe.

According to a recent announcement, there have been several incidences of bag thefts from right in front of the servery. Bags, in all situations, have been returned to their owners, but money and valuables have been stolen.

The official word from the administration is that students need to leave their bags in the company of a friend to prevent them from being stolen. But why is it the student's responsibility? It's true that students are the ones behind the thefts, but it's not our problem that we can't bring our bags into the servery itself.

The draconian policy that prevents us from bringing our bags in while we're shopping for our food is pointless. It attempts to create an issue where there is none. How often could students steal food? Even with a rash of crime, a few $2 or $3 sandwiches gone every day doesn't compare to the potential for, say, stolen wallets, cellphones or iPods of the students that Chartwells serves.

All that the moronic rule does is demonstrate how profit-focused and student-ignorant the business institutions here at Innisdale are. We deserve the right to be protected from theft, and it is our school, so our rights should be put first. I don't think we should lose hundreds of dollars just to protect the bottom line of some enigmatic, disconnected business. No matter how nice the caf ladies are. (Although they rock.)
