On Friday, March 26, Innisdale will be participating in Purple Day with others around the world. People wear purple on the day to support epilepsy awareness. Founded in 2008 by Canadian Cassidy Megan, who struggles with epilepsy, it has since spread around the world and last year 100,000 students, 95 workplaces and 116 politicians participated in Purple Day.
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder affecting nearly 300,000 Canadians which triggers seizures, more commonly in children or seniors. Around the world, around 50 million people are living with epilepsy, and at least one in ten people will have one seizure in their lifetime.
Currently, there is no proven "cure" for epilepsy. However, more than half of people with epilepsy can control their seizures with medication and 10-15% can eliminate seizure activity with brain surgery. Some children will also outgrow epilepsy.
