Have you ever heard someone refer to something as 'gay' when they wanted to express distaste for the object in question? Have you ever seen a person being made fun of for not conforming to gender stereotypes, or being mocked for their sexual orientation? Did you want to speak out?
On Friday, April 16, Innisdale students will be mute for a 'Day of Silence', in association with the Gay Straight Alliance. As the name suggests, they will not speak, in the interest of bringing attention to homophobic name-calling and harassment in schools.
While many of us are aware that 'gay' should not be used as a substitute for negative turns of phrase, we can become accustomed to doing so without even realizing. And it corresponds that, through this, we can easily be conditioned to think of the queer community as a bad one.
The day is also in support of those in countries where religious and political persecution are rampant, who risk dire consequences when expressing their opinions or beliefs.
Signs to explain the silence will be available for participants to wear around their necks. Additionally, students are encouraged to communicate through writing during their classes.
