Celebrating our pasts, celebrating ourselves

The Black History Month Club has been hard at work since September to organize an assembly emblematic of everything BHM stands for. On Friday, February 26th, they found that their efforts were not in vain. The seventy-five minute presentation consisted of spirited singing and dancing, and a skit that took a look at the history of Africa, and of the struggle of black people worldwide, entitled "She's Too Black". Supplementary pieces, like the poem "Great Servants", created by grade twelve student, Keagan Bowen, and artwork by grade twelve students, Asanth Neminathan and Shane Stephens-Sinclair, only added to the assembly's charm. When asked about her experience at the presentation, grade twelve student, Kimberley Britton, succinctly said, "the Black History Month assembly was amazing, but my favourite part was by far the choir."

After months of hard work and two long periods of presenting, all of the members were extremely proud of what they accomplished. Itunu Babatunde, a grade twelve student, shared, "We worked very hard on this performance. It was a great experience and if I wasn't graduating this year, I would definitely do it again. The dance, the music, and the drama were awesome and I have to congratulate the entire club for creating it with such originality and imagination."

Keagan Bowen, one of the group's organizers, agreed: "I was proud that everyone who participated put their time and effort into the assembly. It was a great success and I hope that, for the years to come, people will still continue to do it."
