These days at Innisdale, it seems that most of the free places to eat lunch are those where nobody wants to sit, because there is too much garbage. The amount of trash in the Great Hall and the cafeteria has been exceptionally bad this year. This could be due to the addition of another lunch period, rather than the usual period three and four lunches. It could be because it is now winter and less people are going out for lunch. Whatever the reason, the situation is becoming increasingly worse, and something must be done about it.
"I have period four lunch, and the mess is always disgusting by the time I get to eat," says grade eleven student Samantha Day. "I'm sure everyone is not like this at home, so they need to treat the school with the same respect."
Supervising teachers attempt to keep the level of garbage under control by asking students to put their trash in the recycling or garbage bins. However, their efforts are constantly ignored and students continue not to clean up after themselves. Excuses such as "It was there when I came here!" are constantly made, and the garbage is left until the end of the day.
Students have been told to improve the garbage situation several times through the announcements. Warnings of losing eating privileges in the Great Hall have been given, yet little progress seems to be made. It is such an easy thing to keep under control, as it only takes a few seconds to locate garbage or recycling bins in our school. Another way to reduce the waste is to bring lunch containers rather than wrapped foods, and it is also better on the environment. Lastly, if you see any abandoned wrappers or boxes of fries, be a helpful student and throw it in the garbage. This way we are all working towards a common goal of keeping out school clean!
