Spectacular Skating at the Mariposa Christmas Show

|

Innisdale is a stone's throw away from one of the most renowned skating institutions in the country. But how many give a thought about figure skating? The graceful sport that combines strength, stamina, and technical skill with dance, music, artistry, and a bit of flare, figure skating is a sight to behold. That all of this is done balanced on a thin blade of metal makes it definitely clear that figure skating is harder than it looks. An important element in the sport, every bit of the blade is used. Swift jumps of several revolutions (usually 2 to 3, depending on skill level) use edges and the toe pick while combination spins settle on the 'sweet spot' or ball of the blade. The flashy jumps and spins are only a portion of the sport, with credit given for artistry, field moves and connecting steps as well as the technical requirements. Pay attention to more than the falls, because the smallest details show the beauty of this sport! The various disciplines in figure skating are ladies singles, men's singles, ice dance, and pairs.

The Invaders got a firsthand look at all of these events when the Mariposa School of Skating put on yet another fantastic show for the holidays. With a buyout period 5 on Wednesday December 16th 2009, we watched in awe as national and international competitors skimmed the ice. A holiday themed group number began the show, and despite difficulties with the sound system, everything went smoothly. Ice dancers displayed their elegant steps, and pairs skaters showed off their jumps in tandem. There were also beautiful solos from the guys and girls at Mariposa, as well as festive small group numbers set to Christmas music. A show highlight came with the appearance of 2008 World Champion Jeffrey Buttle, who also won bronze at the 2006 Olympics in Turin, Italy. One of the most artistic skaters in the world, Jeff attended Innisdale Secondary School and trained at Mariposa. He performed a piece to a modern rendition of Ave Maria with characteristic smile, artistry and spins. Other notable guests include Tugba Karademir, the first ever female Olympic skater for Turkey (Torino 2006), and Joey Russell, the Canadian Jr. National Champion in 2006.

It was a spectacular show for a great cause; proceeds of the buyout went to the Barrie Food Bank to benefit local families in need. We raised $1160 for the charity, the best tally in 6 years! Thanks to all the Invaders who came out to watch, and congratulations to the organizers and figure skaters who made the event possible. Thank you!
