The second annual "Reading Week" was a success! Innisdale's participation in Invade Canada encouraged students to read to a chosen destination in Canada. The winner who reached their destination this year was Ms. Klein's class, who won a trip to Tree Top Trekking and the runnerup was Mrs. McCubbin's class, who won a pizza party.
This year about forty classes at Innisdale participated in Reading Week. Every day, for the week of November 23 to November 27, there was fifteen minutes of Silent Sustained Reading. Each page read equaled to one kilometre for the class to reach their chosen destination of a Canadian city or town. Students could also be "caught" reading by a Reading Ranger, where they could receive ten bonus miles for their class. Also, the "caught reading" ticket could be placed in a draw to win prizes, which were provided by certain businesses around Barrie, like Snow Valley. There was also a daily quiz to be completed by the class, where, if the answers were correct, they would receive bonus kilometres.
Vice Prinicipal Ms. Smith has this to say about Reading Week at Innisdale: "Invade Canada was a huge success from the point of view that we accomplished two important skills. The first was to encourage reading and develop reading skills, and the second was to foster cooperation in the classroom."
Invade Canada shows students that ALL reading is important and effective, even if its comic book or a cereal box. By having Reading Week at Innisdale, it gives students the practise they need to achieve productive reading and writing skills. Practise makes perfect!
